Anti-trolling features

Hi,
I'm a member of the Cakewalk user forum (which uses ASPPlayground). We've
had a barrage of trolls interrupting the user community with the usual troll antics.
We were wondering if ASPPlayground might have any features which would help
keep such bad users at bay.
Ideas have been:

a. An "Ignore" button so you can ignore a particular user or thread.

and/or

b. "Troll tagging" .. which is something which Craigslist has .. and allows members to
tag a user, post or thread as innappropriate/offensive. If enough votes come in, then
that user/post/thread is removed. Moderators can return them once banned. (My tweak
on this is that you only get so many tagging votes per time period and that users with
longer standing (gold members or whatever) get more votes per month than others.

It's entirely possible that these features are already in ASPPlayground ... if so, it would
be nice to know so that we could ask that they be enabled.

Thanks much ... i like your package very much ..
Jeff

both features are available in the software. You can clikc on the block icon at the end of a person's message to block him, or you can use the member list to search for a person, check the box beside the name, and click on the block list button. The tagging feature - you should see a report link at the lower right hand corner of any post other than yours. You can report abuse through the report link and the moderator team will be able to solve it with you through the ticket system.

thanks for the reply .. it's nice to know about the "block" feature, that may
well do the trick. However, doesn't the tagging feature require some action by
a moderator? I think what we're asking for is a more automated action .. when
enough reports come in .. the post or person is removed (pending review).

We thought having a "number of people ignoring this person" display might be a
good metric to have optionally displayed .. helps give people a reason to
    stay civil.

    thanks again for replying,
    jeff

Yes, if everyone other than the abusers stays civil, but this rarely happens. The ticket system we have generates a lot of good responses from users who utilize it. We used to have a scoring system that will display an average score on the left hand column based on how others rated your posts  (much like the "how many people ignore this person" you suggest, but milder), but we turn it off here because a lot of people hate being rated and they often retaliate. Most of our users disabled the scoring system after using it for a short while.

    hi samuel,
thanks for replying. so i did try out the ticket feature in your demo forum.
it's not exactly what i was suggesting. one of the attributes of trolls is that
they thrive on the near realtime disruption (post -> flame). by the time a moderator
notices the problem, then it's often gone on for a while. we've had some members
leave our forum because they've been harassed by some trollers .. long before
the sponsor moderator notices. the company is reluctant to widen the group
of moderators .. and i completely understand why. i contend having a user vote features (posts
removed or moved to a troll zone) takes away the power/fun of the troll and allows a
    forum to be self-moderating.
Craigslist has a feature where by they allow the members to vote to have a post removed
(for a variety of reasons). It really seems to work well .. might be worth considering for ASPPlayground.
    thanks again,
    jeff

sorry ..  i meant to login in as myself on the last post .. but i created a couple
of user names to test the ticket feature and suffered from multiple personality
    disorder.

I was suggested this kind of comunity self protection  scheme late in first days o 2004.

    Here it is ;

    My another short cut is like below ;

    1. "A" User makes a very bad thing in a post.
    2. "B" user complain about it and posts to hidden area.
    3. Topic status set to red. For easy viewing mods and admins in tt.asp page or search pro page.
    4. "C" user also complains and post below "B" users post.
    5. "D" user also complains and post below "C" users post.
    6. "E" user also complains and post below "D" users post.
    7. "F" user also complains and post below "E" users post.
    8. Forum code sees it has reached 5 or even 10 complaints (user selected) and auto suspends topic for after viewing.
8.5 Maybe stopping users trying to hide others posts by multiple registrations (for abusing this feature) . You can set a limit for counting a complaint for triggering auto suspend feature. I mean user with 5 posts don't count but you can trust a 100 time posted user.
    9. Mod sees a topic has been suspended in his area when viewing tt.asp .
    10. Goes to topic and reads about hidden post and edits "A" users post.
    11. Also mod posts to hidden area about what he had done for what reason.
    12. Mod sets topic status to green in exit and topic seems viewable for other users again.(maybe yellow for allowing close watch for other mods, a problem in there could be happen again)
    13. Everything solved. With a blazing speed. With minimal abusing, using not giving all hard work to moderators.

Sorry for my poor English. I tried to tell it by numbers. All I wanna do keep forum good condition with minimal work by me and my mods.

I see a future in this forum so that's why I am writing this too long. Thank you for reading this.

After that Samuel integarted great unique ticket system. I am sure he will handle a much better security system with next version. He knows our problems.

what if the "report" button isn't displaying?  Is there a config setting I need to check?  We're using 2.5.5 on www.microchip.com/forums

The button isn't showing for admins and moderators. It is only for members.
