Thousands of data centers experience significant services interruptions every year, at the cost of lost business revenue and lost data—or worse. And while disasters and unplanned downtime get the big headlines, planned downtime for hardware maintenance and backups is the cause of the majority of service downtime. Read our white papers on business continuity to learn more.

Achieve Better Data Protection, High Availability, and Disaster Recovery
Business continuity has become a vital ingredient of IT strategies in a world where businesses need to operate 24 hours a day. The disruption of IT services can be fatal to a business. VMware’s virtualization products give you the means to eliminate planned downtime, deliver high availability, and be better prepared for disaster recovery. Virtualize your data center and make it easier to build solutions for the following:

Data protection, including non-disruptive backup and restore processes

High availability through reduced planned and unplanned downtime

Disaster recovery with hardware independent recovery

RE: Virtualization, WmWare licensing (Samuel)

maybe I understand it wrong, but don't the 4 virtual servers have to be running and serving contents at the same time?

RE: Virtualization, WmWare licensing (gun)

But they are the same windows installations in the same server. I can make a big one windows but it will be less secure iis will be more problematic. So we are both losing.

RE: Virtualization, WmWare licensing (Samuel)

License wise, since you are installing the software on 4 different places (be it a virtual or physical), you need a license each.

Virtualization, WmWare licensing (gun)

For windows and IIS limitations I am thinking about Virtualization for the web servers in our farm. So maybe we can use with better efficiency. With latest Quad core cpus it will be interesting to use 4 windows installation in one server.

What will happen when I use 1 physical server and 4 web server installs ?

Wmware can be useful because of they all using same ram pool, cpu pool and I don't have to get a load balancer to balance well and it is more secure because one server goes down because of software problems another one getting place to handle because they have all different ip's.
