Suggestion: Automatically suspends/hides abusive postings
Tue. Dec 23, '03 9:14 AM
( permalink)
Sorry for the silly question but I am a new comer. Whatever happened to the old "report abuse" button ? If we can have: 1. "report abuse" button 2. number_of_complaint as a configurable number 3. when the number_of_complaint has been reached on a post (ie when enough forum members think the post is abusive/offensive), then the post (and only the post itself) is automatically hidden and can only be brought back by an admin. I think this would minimize the amount of work for the moderators and allow the members to police themselves. Power to the people Thanks for listening

Thanks for your suggestion. The report abuse link is still there, and you just can't report your own post. The feature you suggested sounds good, but just like the post rating system, it is prone to be abused.

ORIGINAL: Samuel The feature you suggested sounds good, but just like the post rating system, it is prone to be abused. If you can put a cookie for each person to complain only once for a particular thread (just like poll or rating system), then abuse will minimised. No?

that still won't work because it is cookie-based. It is easy to workaround. This kind of system is really not gonna work great unless you have an absolutely tight membership/post screening agreement and as the site owner does not fear of losing members. Some people take things very very personally and even with one report they can make it sound like the end of the world for you. Now imagine their posts got removed because of this.

Adaptive a counter for abuse reports ?

Maybe you can integrate a counter for abuse reports, after a selected number post will disappear would be good idea. I don't think one person always right but maybe 5 or 10 abuse report would be enough to be suspend post.
