Multiple sites/forums - single user database - it this possible? Tue. Aug 31, '04 9:37 AM (permalink)

We currently run 5 websites covering somewhat similar content, yet each site is dedicated to a particular topic and each topic has a following of roughly 10,000 registered users on a dedicated forum.

What we would like to do is centralize all our account registration so that if they sign up on one forum, they could use their account on any of our sites, is this possible?

We currently dont useASPplayground btw, but if you can help us with this issue we will probably move all our forums to your software.

I have the following suggestion to your problem, and see if it is good enough for you:

    1. install one forum on each of your site, and disable forum registration for all 5 of them in the control panel
    2. use our SIP's PGDRegistration class to build a separate registration page so that once a person registers his info is inserted to each of the forum database

This is the easiest way to get it to work without code modification. This may or may not work for you depending on your requirement.

ok this is good for registration, though what if they'd like to edit their info? Also, would this solution mean that there would be serveral copies of the same account info on each forum, or is there a way to use a central datastore for all accounts, so as not to dublicate data.

What we'd eventually like to do is have centralized account management whereby a user would log into his area and see his posts to all the sites...edit his info as he wishes etc...

We understand that the above requirements are not what your system offers as standard, though if you have the development resources we're prepared to finance the custimazation for us.

If you'd like me to contact you sepertely and discuss things through email please provide an address and i'll be in touch.

Also, do you have scripts available for importing all data and account info from infopop classic?

We have roughly 45,000 user accounts which we would need to import...

        Samuel,

Is there any way i can contact you directly, i need to get a few questions answered since i'd like to move ahead and purchase your software, though i need to know that we'll have good support and a strong development team backing our decision.

          BUMP...

Hi, was there a resolution on this?

I have multiple sites for which I am developing a centralized registration authority for the site registration process.  I'd like for the site registration to also feed the forum membership so the user only has one set of credentials across all sites.  The same forums would be visible from the any of the websites.

          Can this be done?  Thanks...

Thanks for the quick response! ...and displaying the community on mutiple sites is just a matter of configuring them to use the same DB, correct?

yes, but you will need to use the same URL -> a.com and b.com both go to http://a.com/forum/ to use the forum. Our license only allows displaying the forums on one base URL per license.
