Mobile Device Theme Tue. Aug 25, '09 2:14 PM (permalink)
In 3.8, we have a built in Mobile Theme, so this is no longer necessary.

Theme Info

  1. Name: Mobile
  2. Description: This "Mobile Deive" forum theme is a highly modified theme adapted from the standard "Orginal" theme that ships with ASPPlayground.net.  It is designed to allow mobile device users to easily Browse, Reply, and Post Messages and PMs. Most managment functions are not supported.

Because most of the menus and images were removed this theme is also very fast and a nice choice for users with low bandwidth connections even if they aren't using a mobile device.
  3. Compatible Forum Versions: 3.5 - 3.6;
  4. Installation Instruction: Upload the 2 folders in the package, and then enable it in the admin control panel, under Forum Viewing Options -> Available User Selectable Themes

That is excellent.  Have you tried it on a variety of different mobile devices with differing screen sizes?  I don't have an iphone to test it on unfortunately...

I've tried it on a couple different Windows CE and Windows Mobile phones, PDAs, and thin clients.

I don't have an iPhone either so I can't promise anything but I did strip things way down and used plain hyperlinks or buttons with everything I could.

Samuel is also working on making changes to the pages outside the theme folders to work along with this theme to improve the mobile device support further.  If you do get ahold of a iPhone. Try it at http://www.masm.org/mForums

Not bad.  Though, I have a few requests...

The main forum display is still too wide.  A lot of space is wasted - making the text small, unreadable.
This is what it looks like:

It would look a lot better like this:

The thread view is at it's best.

It would be nice if you could also remove the Photo Gallery links, IMO.

I'll have to see what I can do.. The problem with mobile devices is that there are sooo many different formats/devices that you can't really be perfect for each one. I'll have to see if I can play with the format something that makes the text in TT.aspx a bit bigger without throughing off the format for WM devices.

What do you mean about the photo gallery links?  The only one I think is still there is the one in the header section. that could easily be removed by the user editing the regular.master file if they didn't like it. Personally I'd liek to find someway to make the whole gallery more mobile friendly. I can see a person being at a get together and wanting to show off pics to friends using their phone. I did some improvement there but becuase of the layout one wouldreally almost need to make totally different mobile versions of those pages...

Yes but it requires you to make some changes to the code files for pages outside the theme itself. Basically you need to insert a few lines into the Page_PreInit method for each page.

If you want the code let me know and I'll post it here.

That would be great if we could set a theme for mobile?  BlogEngine.net does it very nicely. Samuel, maybe 3.7?  Just when I am running out of ideas...bam!

mobile theme 3.5 is compatible with 3.6, and pda posting will be available in 3.8 (upcoming with a new WYSIWYG). With this theme, you get a version that enhances reading on a mobile device.

Attached is the MASM Mobile Theme modified to work with version 3.8.  I haven't thoroughly tested it yet with version 3.8 but feel free to download it and give it a try.

Thanks Chad for your hard work in creating this mobile theme.
