Levels of forum permissions - 05/18/2007 07:20:56 AM
In your list of features, it is mentionned:

ASPPlayground.NET forum supports 5 different levels of forum permissions, which are:

  1. No Access
  2. Read-only
  3. Reply
  4. Post
  5. Post & Reply

These permissions seem quite limited.
-Are there permissions for moderators to edit topics or posts of other members, and to delete topics or posts of other members?
-Can members delete their owns topics/posts?
-Can the Administrator configure each group to show/hide forums (rights per forum I mean). Example: group A can view forum A and B, but group B cannot view only forum B

  • Yes, moderators can edit/delete posts
  • yes, and you can decide whether to allow this in the forum management section in the admin control panel
  • yes, we support Group permission as well

You can go to the demo forum to see the detailed permission setting at http://www.aspplayground.net/dem2/

Thanks for your answer.
The answer to my last point is not clear for me. You answered "we support Group permission as well", but does it mean that the Administrator can configure each group to show/hide forums (rights per forum I mean). Example: group A can view forum A and B, but group B cannot view only forum B.

Where at the demo forum could I see detailed permission settings for this point?

Yes to this part: group A can view forum A and B, but group B cannot view only forum B

You go to the demo forum, login as admin (admin:admin for login:pass), and at the end of the page you will see a link to the admin control panel. Click on it and go to User Groups section. Create 2 user groups. Then go to the user management section. Add any user to the groups you just created.

Then, go to the Forum Management section. Create two forums, and enable Group based Permission for each forum. You will see a button named "Group Permission setup" above the textbox where you specify the Forum Title. Click on it and you will be brought to the group permission management page.

Let me know if you have any difficulties finding the options.

Thanks, it is working fine, but the forums are indeed not available, but they are still visible for others. How do you make them not visible for user that have no access? I have tried with the "private" option, but it does not work. By the way how does this "private" option in forum and group definition work?

If you want to hide the forum (instead of setting No Access for permission), you will need to set it to Private. After setting a forum private, you will see a button named  "Private User Setup". Click on it and add the group you want.

"Group permission" can work with Private forum as well. In the main forum screen, you can specify general private user permission. By doing so, all private users + groups will have the same permission. If you want to give different permission for each group, you will need to use group permission (like you already did).

So,

Private forum + Private Group -> only groups in the private user setup can see this forum. To everyone else, this forum is not accessible

Group Based Permission
-> regardless of the forum status (public/private), you can assign different permission to different groups. It is just that if the forum is private, the user group need to be in "Private User Setup" and  "Group Permission Setup" at the same time.

How to define Moderators and how to configure that they can edit and delete posts of other users?

you click on the Moderator Setup button (beside the group permission and the private user setup button), and you will see the interface to add / delete moderators (individual or group). With this current version, moderators have the ability to edit and delete posts by default, and this does not require additional configuration.
