LastVisit tracking

Is it possible to store a user's LastVisit time on the server rather than with a client-side cookie? Using server-side storage for this information would make browsing the forums from multiple much more user-friendly. With client-side cookies a user has to manually copy over his LastVisit cookie to do an accurate "View new posts" search whereas if this info was stored on the server-side a "View new posts" search would be painless for the user. I believe vBulletin and phpBB both use server side storage for this info. Thanks!
