Information on Private User & Custom Group Permissions for Forum Management

In the forum management interface for a forum, you will see two buttons: manage private users and manage custom group permissions.

What's the relationship between the 2 as you can also add a group in the private user management interface?

First, a private forum is a forum that is hidden to non private users. In other words, if you mark a forum as "private", you will need to add users/groups to the "Manage Private Users" interface to grant access. Anyone who is not added specifically will not see the private forum.

"Manager Private Users" page: allows you to add users/groups to a private forum in order to access a private forum. Users/Groups are given the default permissions you set in the forum management interface.

"Manage Custom Group Permission" page: allows you to give a user group(s) special permissions for the forum.

Let's see an example

When a forum is marked as private, our system works this way:

If you have user group A on the private user page, you can give them a different permission set by also adding user group A to the custom group permission page. This way, members in user group A can be assigned different permissions from the defaults you set in the forum management interface.

For a private forum, adding a group to the custom group permission page automatically adds the group to the private user page.

So, these two features can work independently as well as together. A non-private forum can have custom group permissions defined, and a private forum can work without any custom group permissions (i.e., private users will inherit default permissions).
