Hide Attachments (#) link when using thumbnails Wed. Sep 8, '04 2:49 PM (permalink)

If the Generate Thumbnail for uploaded picture option = Yes, it would be nice if the Attachment (#) link at the bottom of a post was not displayed for any attachments that are displayed as thumbnails. The link simply duplicates the behavior of the thumbnail (while requiring an extra step), and it confuses some users.

If the attachment is a document (something that is not displayed as a thumbnail), then the Attachment (#) link should still be displayed.

Actually the attachment link behavior is not the same as the thumbnail, in the following ways:

(1) It allows a download count
(2) It allows for setting "objDownload.forcedDownload = true" in forceddownload.asp so you can present the user with a open/save dialog box
(3) It allows users to download images with original file names when right clicking/save target as...

I think the above allow a lot more flexibility in viewing/downloading images than just clicking on a thumbnail.

Wow, you really know your way around under the hood, chief!

But are any of these three points really important when it comes to images that have been embedded in a post? I agree that they are crucial for files, but for embedded images?

I guess importance is a subjective thing, but I personally like the attachment link and what it provides.

On another point, what if the post has one or more embedded thumbs and also has one or more other attachments (doc, zip, whatever), do we hide or show the attachment link?

If a post had a mix of embedded images and other file attachments, I think the attachment link should be displayed, but only for the other file attachments.

But you're right, this is a subjective thing. I'm simply responding to a situation that has caused some confusion to some of our users. I made a stab at modifying this myself, but couldn't track the code that generates the attachment link all the way through.

I could see this as an Admin option: Display the Attachments link for embedded images? Yes/No. That would give both of us what we would prefer.

Good discussion, I see your point, but I still disagree a little. Either way is okay with me.
