Group Manager can't see his forum

I have given someone 'group user manager' status but when he logs on he doesn't see his forum. What have I done wrong?

Group manager is not tied to any forum, but to a user group (he can approve/disapprove group membership application). If you want someone or someone in a user group to be able to see a private forum, you need to add him/ his user group to the "Private User Setup" section in the particular forum in the forum management interface in the admin CP.

As a manager I am not getting an email saying that someone is waiting to be approved. Is there another step I need to set up?

you wouldn't get one unless the applicant explicitly sends you one. Also, the notice is sent via PM, not email. However, You would get an email notification for that PM, if you specify that you want to receive PM notification in your profile.
