Ghost New PM Bug

I've encountered a strange bug while using ASP Playground that I haven't encountered on forums like InvisionFree and ProBoards (given those aren't quite as high quality and were free versions, so also greatly limited).  This bug makes it so that people always have a "You have 1 unread private messages." in the Private Message field in the My Forums page under the user control panel.  It isn't much, I know, but a lot of people do find it annoying.  I'm also wondering if that could somehow affect other features on the forums from something in the code.
