I've read through the forum FAQ but did find a complete answer to my question. Can users respond to forum posts through their email when they receive a subscription or is this functionality available in another form?

Hi, Subscription is a one-way service, meaning that it is meant to be used as a notification, but cannot take messages by accepting replies from email.
