Is there a way for each user to upload their own avatar / image / animated gif?

    Yes, under AdminCP -> Site Wide Options (basic configuration) -> User Features 2/2, you can allow avatars to be uploaded. We support 1) stock avatar you provide for your members, 2) user upload 3) Gravatar with the software.
