Expanded User Group Based Forum Permission - easy permission management with complete control

Managing user permissions in a growing community can become a daunting task. At first it may not seem like a big deal, but as the community grows so does your responsibility. At certain point you will want to limit access to certain forums to only certain users (e.g. paying members, or members who have made certain amount of posts , etc.). There is no better way to manage this situation with out expanded user group permission system.

Let's go through a situation that our User Group Based permission can be helpful:

You create a forum, "Paying Members", and you want only your real paying members to be able to post/view the messages in this forum, because you want to provide certain benefits on the forums so that you can manage and protect your content easily. It could be a recipe that is only available to paying members, or some bonus downloadable materials that you want to share with your loyal customers.

However, you don't want to hide completely this forum to non paying members because you want to show them you do have a lot to share with them once they become paying members too. To satisfy this need, you will create a user group, "Paying Members", and give this group full privilege (post & reply, attach file, create poll, etc.) to the forum. For all other users (general public), you will assign them "List" permission to this forum, so that they can see the entire message listing but not the actual content.

In addition, what if you want to offer a trial period for non-paying users to get a feel about your community? It could be that you want to put up some materials (as digital file attachments) that is not in the public domain but you want to share it with those who at least take the time to register an account on your forum. To do this, you will create a user group named "Trial Members" (or any name you like), and set group membership length (30 days, for example). Then you give this group certain (could be lesser) privilege to the forum that hosts your content (e.g. you could make them read-only as you want them to be able to read but not ask questions) This way, users who is added to this group will become a member of the "Trial Members" and can only access the forum for a month.

Let's say now you have a forum set up for general discussion, but the community is asking for an additional forum to host discussion on a specific topic. For example, you have a "Oriental Cooking" forum, and as the community grows your members want to discuss making Sushi in its own forum, separate from the general Oriental Cooking forum. You took time to carefully set up the permissions for different User Groups for the Oriental Cooking forum and now you need to replicate that. You don't want to have to do it again, do you?

The software solves this problem for you by way of permission and settings inheritance. You can easily add a Sub Forum named "Sushi" to the "Oriental Cooking" parent forum and choose to inherit Parent Permissions and/or Settings. This way, Sushi will have every setting Oriental Cooking has, plus if you make change to the permissions for Oriental Cooking, the changes will reflect in your Sushi forum as well. This saves you a lot of time making permission/setting changes to closely related forums.

Let's talk about time savers on managing Group User Membership: Usually you add members to a group from the admin interface, but doing it this way you will have to manually select users and groups which can be a very lengthy process. So, in addition to manually adding users, you can allow your members to apply to join a user group that is enabled for membership application.

You can set a number of restrictions, e.g., must be a regular member for x days, must have contributed x number of posts, must have earned x community reward points, etc. as the application prerequisites to prevent certain users from applying. Of course, you can also review applicants one-by-one as well if you need them to present certain info in order to join (like an Order ID). You will then approve / disapprove membership application on the User Group interface with a single mouse click.

However, this still can be a daunting task for any admins. To ease this burden of having to manage too many things, you can assign a group manager to each group to take care of the approval process. An automatic welcome message can also be set up to notify members about their approvals, and certainly, disapproval reasons can also be sent.

In addition to assigning different permission for different forums, we also have several group based preferences that are tied to the group members only, like the ability to use the search feature, number of private messages one can store, special Flood Control settings (a spam fighting feature), and special title and graphic that appears beside their name on the message they post, etc.

By the way, the software will manage possible permission conflicts in case you add a member to multiple groups, so that you don't have to worry about it.

Moderators can now split a thread into 2 independent message threads (long threads often turn into a totally off-topic discussion), and they can also join 2 message threads (same questions, same topic by different members) into one. Users usually don't bother to check existing messages, so sometimes a forum gets littered with similar posts. This could be a bother to some users and the ability to split/join discussions are a great asset to keep the forum messages in order.

In addition to this feature, moderators now have the ability to differentiate different levels of pinned posts. Sometimes there are more than a couple important messages you want to pin to the top of the message list, but there are also differences in terms of importance among these posts. We support 3 levels of pin-to-top posts that allows moderators to prioritize the placement of these important message in this new version.

Membership Provider Integration - seamless integration with your existing membership system

If you already have a membership system that are working OK for you, or if you are already manually managing multiple membership databases (different software), adding a forum system which has its own user database is definitely a pain you want to avoid. We understand this issue and therefore build right into the software support for the ASP.NET Membership Provider Pattern, the standard way of interacting with different user dbs.

Right out-of-the-box, if you already are using the SQL Membership Provider to manage your users, you can use the forum software with your existing members without they having to register again or you having to import them into the forum db. The forum software automatically keep both system in sync so that your members can update email/password on the forum, and the changes will reflect automatically on your system. You can also make sure users only register on your own page by disabling the forum registration system. If you have specific requirements for password strength you set in your membership provider definition, the forum reads the specs as well to make sure the registrants through the forum (if you allow, of course) provide a password that fits your design.

This support for external membership system is not limited to the default SQL Membership Provider, but to any membership system that provides an ASP.NET Membership Provider interface. So, if you are not using the SQL membership provider but your own system, all you have to do is to provide a membership provider interface (very simple - basically copy/paste your own existing logics into a membership provider template), and your user info will plug right into the software without you having to do anything extra.

Of course, the forum also can operate on its own user database, which means you do not have to already have a membership db in order to use the forum. It will work right out-of-the-box on its own.

What if you do not have a membership database at the moment?

In addition to integration with a pre-existing membership db, we also provide our own Membership Provider for you to use on your site. This Membership Provider allows you to interact with our user database programmatically using the standard ASP.NET membership provider model. With our membership provider installed you can build your site using our forum database as the member data store. In other words, you can

1. Build a login page on your site and once a user is logged in, he is logged in to the forum as well - Single Sign On, and vice versa.
2. Build a registration page for your site and have users inserted into our database.

Performance, performance, performance! We had the most active Snitz site of any I had seen (250-400 concurrent users in normal use, over 3 million page views a month in the forums alone), ran it on a dedicated web server AND dedicated database server and it just dragged. Page loads were INTERMINABLE. Users were leaving us. We used it for a year, so we really did try to make it work and were reluctant to dump it. Yet we installed ASP-PGD and were up and running in less than a week with a single programmer working on it. We *converted* existing Snitz posts and added new features during this time, too. Forum downtime: 1 day. This app ROCKS in performance due to the smart design: it uses stored procedures and CLIENT-SIDE UBB-code message parsing, none of that looping "Instr" and "Split" stuff you find in Snitz and other forums just to turn an ascii emoticon into a gif. Our boards now deliver pages in less than a second. Where Snitz uses spaghetti-fied, SQL-loaded code in dozens of bloated ASP files, ASP-PGD code is SQL-less (stored procs), succinct and easy to follow. Modifications are a breeze, due to the quality design. It's also "pretty", and the support is great. The company is very open to modification suggestions and you get the source code (obviously, it's in ASP.NET). You WON'T find a better forum out there for ASP.NET. IMHO if your forum has less traffic than ours you can solve problem like us or more price wise only one Dual Opteron 248 server are enough for everything.
